LOVELL HOUSE

Modest home extension to dramatically increase living space, Henley on Thames, Oxfordshire

A modest home extension and internal refurbishment of an existing terraced property in Henley-on-Thames has transformed a small, tired kitchen into an open, airy kitchen and living space.  The existing kitchen of this three-bedroom home was incredibly confined, with limited light and in need of modernisation. Our client sought a minimally sized solution to achieve the maximum possible impact on the original living space.

Our
Approach

The limited size of the garden was a crucial factor in the design, as the owner wished to retain as much usable garden space as possible. Our solution incorporated a small, rear extension to increase the kitchen's size while preserving the garden's usability.

We wrapped the top of the extension with high-level clerestory glazing to bathe the interior in natural light and the addition of bi-fold glass doors opening to the garden doesn't just maximise the light, it also creates a seamless connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces, perfect for alfresco dining in warmer months.

The internal refurbishment included creating a new opening to the dining room, resulting in a more open and spacious kitchen area.  This and light, modern finishes throughout the refurbishment complete the look, enhancing the overall aesthetic and functionality of the space.

The new extension totals just 13 square meters, a small but impactful addition to the home.

This project is now complete, and we are pleased to report that our client is very satisfied with their new home.

"It has transformed the way I use the house and also given me a much more connected outlook on the garden. It is a great space which I know I will enjoy for many years to come!"

By incorporating thoughtful design elements and addressing the client's needs, this modest extension and refurbishment have successfully transformed the living space, creating a bright, modern, and functional home that enhances the connection to the garden.
