Contemporary extension to an eclectic house in a conservation area., Berkshire
This mews property close to the University of Reading has undergone a century of modifications and extensions resulting in a characterful eclectic house. The owner wished to continue this legacy with a unique contemporary extension to provide a large master bedroom suite along with an open plan living dining area connected to the family kitchen, opening out into the garden.

Approach
The site has a peculiar residual triangular shape that informed the design response. The scheme inserts a split-level ground floor reducing the ground floor level to minimize overbearing on the neighbouring properties. This ground floor space opens out to a lowered external landscaped deck, which rises up to a new outdoor swimming pool. The ground floor construction emulates the existing white painted brickwork, tying the extension to existing building fabric. The first floor bedroom juxtaposes delineating in both form and material. It dramatically cantilevers over the newly framed dining area clad in a crisp zinc standing seam cladding subtly complementing the existing slate roof and lead details.

Approximately £200,000
FEATURES
3D (BIM) (Building Information Modelling), this approach was essential to maximize the sites potential dealing with rights of light issues. Continuing this method into construction will resolve the inherent complexity of the faceted structure.
