Loft conversion and internal remodelling to transform bungalow, Reading Berkshire
A two-bedroom bungalow on a large plot converted into a five-bedroom house
The brief was to provide additional bedroom spaces in the form of a loft conversion, and opening up the ground floor plan.
The property was previously extended and suffered from an internal windowless room. The proposals did not extend the ground floor, but opened up and restructured the space. Opening the dining space to the southwest facing garden for BBQ's and garden parties facilitated the family's entertaining needs.
The main entrance was relocated to the front of the house allowing for a guest en-suite facility at the ground floor.
A new double height entrance space was created into the existing roof space with Velux roof lights. This approach had minimal impact on the street scene, a local planning constraint.
The loft conversion/extension focused on the rear of the building with the master bedroom cantilevering over the ground floor glazing providing solar shading and secluded views over the extensive garden. The insertion of a small private sun terrace offers a perfect oasis of calm for this dramatic, bustling family home.
Approximately £185,000 to convert a 114 m2 (1,225 sq.ft.) bungalow into a 190 m2 (2,050 sq.ft.) luxury house.
Use of light weight SIPS construction for first floor extension, cantilevered floor, and mixed timber cladding materials
