PHEASANT HOUSE

A stunning new-build smart home, replacing a dated 1970's bungalow, Wokingham

After obtaining planning permission from Wokingham Borough Council, this ambitious project is now nearing completion, poised to deliver a modern, sustainable living space that balances innovation with respect for its surroundings.

OUR
APPROACH

After conducting a comprehensive feasibility study to carefully evaluate both new-build and refurbishment options, the decision was made to pursue a new-build scheme. Positioned at the end of a cul-de-sac and bordered by a railway to the north, with a south-facing aspect, the property's distinctive context played a significant role in shaping our design approach.

The resulting design comprises two wings connected by a glazed link, blending modern architecture with sensitivity to the surrounding environment. The single-storey front wing, with a mono-pitched roof maintains the position, scale and proportions of the existing dwelling, harmonising with the street scene, while presenting a distinct, contemporary aesthetic.

The two-storey rear wing, positioned towards the back of the property, houses the main living areas and is set lower than the front to minimize its visual impact. This wing’s orientation maximizes southern exposure for natural light and passive solar heating, while minimizing northern glazing to enhance privacy and reduce railway noise. The garden, situated to the south, remains sunny and open, avoiding shade from nearby trees.

To preserve two mature oaks within the plot, we developed a custom foundation system in coordination with arboriculturists and structural engineers, ensuring minimal impact on the trees' root protection areas.

This project reflects a balance of innovation, sustainability, and respect for the existing landscape, creating a contemporary yet contextually aware home.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS

Pheasant House showcases several distinctive design features that reveal themselves as you approach and move through the property. The journey begins at the front wing with an integral covered entrance porch, leading you through the front door into a striking double-height entrance hall. This central space seamlessly connects to the ground floor of the rear wing and provides access to the first floor via a feature open-tread staircase, all framed by a stunning glazed link that enhances the flow and visual continuity between the different areas of the house.
